Machining vs Alternatives

Machining vs Alternatives — Tolerances: ±0.003 mm milling, ±0.002 mm turning — ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 (product design excluded) verified.

Machining cuts metal to tolerance; casting pours it, forging works it, printing builds it. Compare them on the four things that decide a part: tolerance, strength, shape freedom and cost.

At a glance
  • Machining wins on tolerance and real material properties
  • Printing wins on shape at one piece; casting at volume; forging on fatigue
  • Nearly every cast or forged part is still machined on its critical features

Machining versus 3D printing

Printing makes a shape a cutter cannot; machining makes the tolerance and material property a print cannot. A printed metal part is rarely the same density or fatigue life as machined bar stock. Print for one-off shape review, machine for anything that must fit, load, or ship.

Machining versus casting and forging

Casting pours near-net shape cheaply at volume but carries porosity and loose tolerance. Forging works the grain for the best fatigue life but with little shape freedom. Machining cuts dense stock to ±0.003 mm. The pattern that matters: nearly every cast or forged part still gets machined on its faces, bores and threads.

The decision table

Casting±0.1 mm+LowerHighVolume
Forging±0.1 mm+HighestLowFatigue parts
Is machining better than printing?

For anything that must hold tolerance, load, or ship in volume, yes. For one-off shape review, printing is faster and cheaper.

When should I forge instead of machine from solid?

When the part carries a cyclic structural load and volume amortises the forging tool. Below that, machine from bar stock at the same tolerance.

Tell us the geometry, quantity and load — we will name the process, or the hybrid.
